# Businesses

> Track companies and organizations your practice works with.

Businesses are company records that represent organizations relevant to your practice — employers, custodians, vendors, referral firms, or any other entity you want to track. You can link [other contacts](/records/other-contacts) and [people](/records/people) to a business through employment records, and attach [tasks](/activity/tasks/overview), [meetings](/activity/meetings/overview), notes, and comments directly to a business.

## Creating a business

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the creation form">
    Click **+ New business** on the **Businesses** page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the business details">
    Fill in the **Business name** (required). Optionally add an **Email**, **Phone** number, **Website**, and **Industry**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Create">
    The business is created and appears in the list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The business list

The **Businesses** page displays all businesses in a table with these default columns:

* **Business** — the business name (links to the detail page)
* **Email address** — primary email
* **Phone number** — primary phone
* **Website** — website URL (opens in a new tab)
* **Industry** — industry category
* **Tags** — assigned tags (editable inline)

Click any column header to sort by that field. You can sort by name, email, website, industry, created date, and updated date.

### Search

Click the <Icon icon="search" /> icon in the toolbar or start typing to search businesses by name. Results update as you type.

### Filtering

Use the **Tags** chip at the top of the list to quickly filter by tag. Click **Filter** for additional conditions:

* **Name**, **Email**, **Phone number**, **Industry**, **Website** — match by text
* **City**, **State**, **ZIP** — match by address fields
* **Tags** — filter by one or more tags
* **Book** — filter by book (visible when viewing across all books)

Custom fields also appear as filter options.

### Views

The default view is **All businesses**. Click the **+** button next to the view tab to create a custom view with saved filters and sort order. Rename a view by clicking its name.

## Managing a business

Click a business name in the list to open its detail page.

### Header

The header displays the business name, primary email (as a clickable badge), and a profile picture. Click **+ Add tags** to assign tags for categorization and filtering.

Use the buttons in the top-right corner:

* **Add task** — create a [task](/activity/tasks/overview) linked to this business
* **Start meeting** — start an in-person, online, or past [meeting](/activity/meetings/overview) filed under this business. Choose a **Meeting type** in the create form, and Slant generates an AI [meeting prep](/activity/meetings/creating-and-recording-meetings#meeting-preparation) brief for upcoming business-only meetings.
* **Start project** — start a [project](/activity/projects/overview) filed under this business. The project type list is limited to types whose **Owner kind** is business.
* **...** (more menu) — add a note, edit the overview layout or tab order (admins only), or destroy the business

### Tabs

The left side of the detail page has tabs for:

* **Overview** — a customizable dashboard with **Meetings**, **Tasks**, **Projects**, **Opportunities**, and **Related records** widgets and an **Activity** feed. See [the overview tab](#the-overview-tab).
* **Phone** — call logs and recordings (requires a [phone integration](/setting-up-slant/integrations/phone))
* **Meetings** — [meetings](/activity/meetings/overview) filed under this business
* **Tasks** — [tasks](/activity/tasks/overview) linked to this business
* **Notes** — notes created on this business

To preserve a note from further changes, open its **⋮** menu and choose **Lock**. Locked notes are read-only and can't be deleted; any user can unlock them from the same menu.

Admins can reorder these tabs for the whole company. From the **...** menu on a business, select **Edit tab order**, drag the tabs into the order you want, then click **Save**. See [reordering the tabs](/records/households/overview#reordering-the-tabs) for the full workflow.

<Note>
  Tab order is shared across your company. Only admins can change it; everyone else sees the saved order.
</Note>

### The overview tab

The **Overview** tab opens to a top row of three widgets — **Meetings**, **Tasks**, and **Projects** — followed by **Opportunities** and **Related records** widgets and a full-width **Activity** feed.

The **Opportunities** widget lists [opportunities](/activity/opportunities/overview) linked to this business, with an **Add opportunity** button. When none exist, it shows a **No opportunities** empty state.

The **Activity** feed shows when the business was created and lists tasks, notes, and meetings as they're added. Each entry shows who created it and when.

### Customizing the overview layout

Businesses share the same drag-and-drop overview editor as households. Click **...** → **Edit overview layout** to open the editor.

The available widgets for businesses are **Meetings**, **Tasks**, **Projects**, **Opportunities**, and **Related records**. The layout is shared across your company, and only admins can edit it. See [customizing the household overview layout](/records/households/overview#customizing-the-overview-layout) for the full workflow.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="How do businesses relate to other contacts?">
    [Other contacts](/records/other-contacts) can be linked to a business through the **Business** field on the contact's detail page. This is useful for tracking which firm a CPA, attorney, or referral source works for. A business can have many linked contacts.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do businesses relate to people?">
    [People](/records/people) can be linked to a business through employment records. Each employment record tracks a role, start and end dates, and active status. A person can have multiple employments across different businesses.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I import businesses from another CRM?">
    Yes. Businesses are included when you import data from Redtail, Wealthbox, or Salesforce. You can also bulk-import businesses from a spreadsheet: go to **Settings** → **Data import** and choose the **Business** record type. Each row creates one standalone business — the import doesn't link them to households or people. See [CSV import](/setting-up-slant/importing-your-data/csv-import) or [importing your data](/setting-up-slant/importing-your-data/overview) for details.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I add custom fields to businesses?">
    Yes. Go to **Settings** → **Data customizations** → **Custom fields** and add fields for the **Business** record type. Custom fields appear on the business detail page and can be used as filters.
  </Accordion>
