Writing effective searches

Be specific about who

Include details about the person:
CriteriaExample
Profession”Doctors,” “Tech executives,” “Business owners”
Demographics”in their 40s and 50s,” “couples,” “faculty”
Industry”Healthcare,” “Software,” “Manufacturing”
Affiliation”State employees,” “University of Texas”

Include location

Geographic targeting improves relevance:
  • “in Denver”
  • “in the Kansas City metro”
  • “in northern Georgia”

Combine criteria

The best searches combine multiple factors:
Blue-collar business owners in northern Georgia
State employees in the Kansas City metro
University of Texas faculty in their 40s and 50s
Religious couples in Chicago who work in software

Search progress

After starting a search, you see status updates as it progresses:
  • Pending — Starting the search
  • Searching — Converting your query to LinkedIn search filters
  • Processing — Analyzing search results
  • Filtering — Refining results to find the best matches
  • Completed — Search is done
Results stream into the table as they are found. You do not need to wait for the search to complete to start reviewing profiles.

Review results

Results display in a table with four columns:
ColumnShows
ProspectName, photo, LinkedIn link, location, headline
Current roleJob title, company, dates, location
EducationSchool, degree, years
CriteriaMatch score showing how many criteria the profile meets

Criteria match details

Hover over the criteria score to see a detailed breakdown. Each criterion shows:
  • Whether the profile matches (Yes, No, or Maybe)
  • The reasoning behind the assessment

Import a prospect

To add a profile to Slant as a prospect:
  • Hover over the profile row
  • Click Add as prospect
  • Scouting enriches the profile with email and phone data
  • A prospect record is created in your book
Each import uses one credit from your monthly budget. The remaining credits are shown in the top-right corner of the results page. Note: If the profile already exists in your book, a link to the existing record appears instead of the import button.

Recent scouting reports

Previous searches appear on the Scouting home page under Recent scouting reports. Click any report to view its results again.

Tips for better results

  • Start broad, then narrow. If results are not relevant, add more specific criteria.
  • Use multiple searches. Different criteria combinations surface different prospects.
  • Try the suggested searches. Example queries are shown when you have fewer than two reports.
