This glossary defines the key terms you’ll encounter while using Slant.

Core concepts

Book

Your workspace in Slant. A book contains all your clients, prospects, contacts, tasks, and other data. Think of it like a Slack workspace—everything is organized within your book. Each book has a principal (the advisor who owns it) and can have multiple team members with different access levels. Learn more about book settings

Household

A family unit you serve. Every household is either a Client or a Prospect (see below). Households contain:
  • A head of household (required)
  • Optionally, a spouse or partner
  • Optionally, dependents and other family members

Client

An active, paying customer. Clients are households that you currently serve. They have:
  • Service tier (A, B, C, or D) indicating priority level
  • Review schedule for regular check-ins
  • AUM tracking (Assets Under Management)

Prospect

A potential customer you’re cultivating. Prospects are households that aren’t yet clients. When a prospect becomes a client, you can convert them, which preserves all their data and history. Learn more about prospects

Contact

A professional relationship that isn’t a client or prospect. Contacts include:
  • CPAs and accountants
  • Estate attorneys
  • Referral sources
  • Centers of influence
  • Other professional relationships
Contacts have one primary person record and can be linked to multiple households. Learn more about contacts

Person

An individual human being. People belong to households or contacts. Each person has:
  • Contact information (email, phone, address)
  • Role within their household (head of household, spouse, dependent, etc.)
  • Employment and professional information

Relationship terms

Head of household (HOH)

The primary person in a household. Every household must have exactly one head of household. This is typically the primary client contact.

Service tier

A priority classification for clients, displayed as A, B, C, or D:
  • Tier A — Highest priority clients
  • Tier B — High priority clients
  • Tier C — Standard clients
  • Tier D — Lower priority clients
Tiers help you prioritize your time and can be used to filter your client list.

AUM (Assets Under Management)

The total market value of assets you manage for a client. AUM is tracked automatically when you connect custodian accounts, or can be entered manually.

Review cadence

How often you meet with a client for formal reviews. Options include:
  • Monthly
  • Quarterly
  • Trimesterly (every 4 months)
  • Semi-annual
  • Annual
  • Surge (concentrated review periods)

Activity terms

Task

An action item or to-do. Tasks can be:
  • Assigned to yourself or team members
  • Linked to clients, contacts, or projects
  • Given deadlines and priorities
  • Recurring on a schedule

Meeting

A calendar event, typically with one or more clients or contacts. Meetings can be:
  • Synced from your calendar
  • Created manually in Slant
  • Recorded with AI transcription

Project

A multi-step initiative for a client, like onboarding, financial planning, or estate planning. Projects contain milestones and tasks. Learn more about projects

Opportunity

A potential deal or AUM growth opportunity. Opportunities move through pipeline stages as they progress. Learn more about opportunities

Note

A written record attached to a client, contact, or meeting. Notes support rich text formatting and can be created quickly from anywhere in Slant.

Automation terms

Workflow

An automated process that triggers based on events. Workflows can create tasks, send notifications, update records, and more. Learn more about workflows

Sequence

An automated series of emails sent over time. Sequences help you nurture prospects or maintain regular contact with clients. Learn more about sequences

Agent

An AI-powered automation that can perform tasks and make decisions. Agents can be configured from the marketplace or built custom. Learn more about agents

Integration terms

Custodian

A financial institution that holds client assets (like Schwab, Fidelity, or TD Ameritrade). Slant can connect to custodian data to track AUM and account information. Learn more about custodian integration

Principal

The advisor who owns a book. Each book has exactly one principal. The principal has full administrative access to the book.

Email integration

Connection to your email provider (Gmail or Outlook) that syncs:
  • Calendar events and meetings
  • Email threads with clients
  • Contact information

Command palette

A quick-access search and command interface. Open with Cmd/Ctrl + K to search for anything or run commands.

Quick actions

Buttons for creating items quickly without navigating away:
  • Quick note — Create a note instantly
  • Quick task — Add a task from anywhere
  • Instant meeting — Start or log a meeting

List

A saved, filtered view of records. Lists help you focus on specific groups of clients, tasks, or other records.

Data terms

Custom field

A user-defined field that extends Slant’s default data model. Custom fields can be:
  • Text, number, currency, date, or select type
  • Added to households, contacts, or projects
  • Used in filters and reports

Tag

A label used to categorize records. Tags can be applied to:
  • Households (clients and prospects)
  • Contacts
  • Tasks
  • Opportunities

CSV import

A method for bulk-importing data using comma-separated value files. Useful for migrating from other systems or adding many records at once. Learn more about CSV import
