Karbon is practice-management software used by CPA firms. When your firm works with a tax practice on Karbon, Slant can create the household’s contacts and a tax work item in Karbon with one click, and show the work item’s status on the client record as the CPA team moves it through their workflow.
Karbon is enabled per firm. If Karbon does not appear under Settings → Integrations, contact your Slant representative.

Connect Karbon

Only users with the Manage integrations permission can connect Karbon. The connection is shared by every book in your firm.
1

Copy the tenant access key from Karbon

In Karbon, go to Settings → Connected apps → Slant → Manage and copy the access key. If the Slant app is not listed, ask your Karbon contact to enable it for your tenant.
2

Paste it into Slant

In Slant, go to Settings → Karbon, click Connect Karbon, and paste the key. Slant encrypts it before storing it.
3

Choose send defaults

On the Defaults tab, pick the Karbon user who should receive new work items, the work template to start (for example the tax return template your CPA team uses), the client owner, and the contact type. Nobody can send a household until an assignee and template are set.
4

Give your team access

On the Team access tab, add the teammates who should work with Karbon and choose what each of them can do. See Team access.
Slant registers a Karbon webhook when you connect, so status changes reach Slant within about a minute. Click Refresh Karbon settings after the CPA team adds users, templates, or statuses in Karbon.

Existing Karbon clients are matched automatically

The first time you connect, Slant looks for each of your clients in Karbon and links the ones it finds. It matches the head of household to a Karbon contact by a Slant ID the CPA team already entered, then by email, and falls back to their first and last name when no email matches. If Slant previously created an organization for the household, it restores that organization link. Otherwise, if the contact belongs to a matching Karbon client group, Slant links the household to the group. Slant skips any client with more than one possible match in Karbon, so nothing is linked by guesswork. Link those clients yourself from their Karbon tab. Matching runs in the background and can take a while for a large firm.

Team access

The person who connects Karbon gets full access. Everyone else, including other admins, has no Karbon access until someone with the Manage integrations permission adds them on Settings → Karbon → Team access. New teammates start with View work items. Karbon access never widens client access. A teammate only sees the Karbon tab for clients they can already open. Without any Karbon permission, the tab shows only the name of the linked Karbon client.

Send a household to Karbon

Teammates with Create work items can send any client they can edit. Open the client, choose the Karbon tab, and click Send to Karbon. Review the preview, adjust the work item title, template, assignee, or dates if needed, and click Send. Slant creates:
  • A Karbon contact for the head of household and their spouse or partner, with name, email, phone, address, and date of birth.
  • An organization for the household, including single-person households, with the contacts attached.
  • A work item from the chosen template, assigned to the chosen Karbon user.
The new work item appears in the tab’s work items list as Sending while Slant creates it. If Karbon rejects it, the row shows Failed with Karbon’s error, and Retry reuses the contacts and organization that were already created. Slant never sends Social Security numbers or other tax identifiers, and it does not update Karbon when household details change later. Teammates with Link / unlink can link a household to a client that the CPA firm already has in Karbon:
  • Link existing Karbon client searches Karbon by name or email and links the selected contact, organization, or client group. Slant matches the organization’s contacts or group’s members to the household’s people by email, then by name.
  • Find by Slant ID looks the household up by the identifier Slant writes into Karbon’s User defined identifier field, so the CPA team can pre-link households in bulk on their side.
Only teammates with Link / unlink can search Karbon. Everyone else sees the linked client but never a list of the tax practice’s other clients. Unlink removes the link in Slant and leaves Karbon unchanged. An unlinked household stays unlinked: Slant will not re-link it on its own, even if it still carries a Slant ID in Karbon. Link it again from the tab when you need to.

Track tax work

Once linked, the Karbon tab shows the Karbon client’s name, which opens it in Karbon, and a list of the household’s work items with their type, status, assignee, and dates. The status shows the CPA team’s own stage names, such as Prep, Review, or Waiting for signature. Statuses update automatically as Karbon sends changes. Click the refresh icon to pull the latest state on demand, or Create work item to start another work item, for example next year’s return. Modified shows the latest modification time received from Karbon, including its change notifications or completion date. Karbon does not expose a separate status-change date. An existing open work item may have no modification date until Karbon sends a change notification.
