Create a project when you have a multi-step initiative to track for a household. Projects use templates, so you’ll select from your organization’s predefined project types.

Create a project

1

Choose where to create

You can create projects from:
  • The Projects page → click + New project
  • A client or prospect record → click Add project in the Projects tab
2

Select a template

Choose the project template that matches your workflow (e.g., “Client Onboarding”, “Financial Plan”, “Estate Planning”).
3

Select the household

If you started from the Projects page, select the client or prospect this project is for. If you started from a household record, it’s pre-selected.
4

Name the project (optional)

The project name auto-generates from the household and template names. You can customize it if needed.
5

Assign an owner (optional)

Assign a team member who will be responsible for this project.
6

Create the project

Click Create to start the project.
The project is created at the first milestone, and tasks for that milestone are automatically generated.

Required information

To create a project, you need:
  • Template — Which project type to use
  • Household — The client or prospect this project is for
The project name and owner are optional and can be set later.

What happens after creation

When you create a project:
  1. First milestone activates — The project starts at the template’s first phase
  2. Tasks are auto-created — Task templates for the first milestone become real tasks
  3. Deadlines are calculated — Task due dates are set based on template offset days
  4. Progress tracking begins — You can see completion percentage as tasks are completed

Create from a client record

The fastest way to create a project is directly from the client record:
1

Open the client record

Navigate to the client or prospect detail page.
2

Go to Projects tab

Click Projects in the record navigation.
3

Add project

Click Add project and select a template.
4

Confirm

The household is pre-selected. Click Create.

Create from the Projects page

To see all projects in one place before creating:
1

Open Projects

Click Projects in the sidebar.
2

View the Kanban

See all active projects organized by milestone.
3

Create new

Click + New project in the top-right corner.
4

Select template and household

Choose the template and which household this project is for.

Assign a project owner

Project owners are responsible for driving the project forward:
1

During creation

Select an owner when creating the project.
2

After creation

Open the project and click the Assigned to field to change the owner.
The assigned owner will see project tasks in their task list and can filter projects by assignment.

Understand task auto-creation

When a project is created or advances to a new milestone, tasks are automatically generated:
Task Template SettingWhat Happens
TitleBecomes the task title
DescriptionBecomes the task description
Deadline offsetDays added to today for the due date
PriorityCopied to the task
Assigned toPre-assigned team member if configured
TagsApplied to the task
If tasks aren’t being created as expected, check the milestone’s task templates in the project template settings.

Skip initial task creation

In some cases, you may want to create a project without auto-generating tasks (e.g., for testing or when you’ll add tasks manually): This is an advanced option available through the API. For normal use, let tasks be auto-created—that’s the point of using templates.

Project limitations

Keep these constraints in mind:
  • A project must link to exactly one household
  • The household cannot be changed after the project is created
  • Projects can only use templates from your organization
  • You cannot create a project without selecting a template
