Create a sequence to send a series of timed emails automatically. This guide walks through building a sequence from scratch.

Create a new sequence

1

Open Sequences

Navigate to AutomationsSequences in the sidebar.
2

Click New sequence

Click + New sequence in the top-right corner.
3

Name your sequence

Enter a descriptive name that explains the sequence’s purpose (e.g., “New prospect follow-up” or “Post-meeting nurture”).
4

Configure settings

Set the sequence options:
  • Send from — Which email account sends the messages
  • Exit criteria — When to remove enrollees automatically

Add email steps

After creating the sequence, add the emails that will send:
1

Click Add step

Click + Add step to add your first email.
2

Set the timing

Choose when this email sends relative to enrollment or the previous step:
  • Day 1 — Sends the same day as enrollment (if within business hours)
  • Day 3 — Sends two business days after the previous step
3

Write your email

Compose the email:
  • Subject — The email subject line (supports variables)
  • Body — The email content (supports rich text and variables)
4

Add more steps

Repeat to add additional emails to the sequence.

Use personalization variables

Make emails feel personal by inserting recipient data:
VariableInserts
person.first_nameRecipient’s first name
person.last_nameRecipient’s last name
household.nameHousehold name
sender.first_nameYour first name
sender.emailYour email address
Example email:
Hi {{person.first_name}},

I wanted to follow up on our conversation about your retirement goals.
Do you have time this week for a quick call?

Best,
{{sender.first_name}}

Timing considerations

Sequences only send during business hours (9 AM – 5 PM) on business days in your timezone. Day 1 timing:
  • If you enroll someone at 10 AM on Tuesday, the Day 1 email sends that day
  • If you enroll someone at 7 PM on Tuesday, the Day 1 email sends Wednesday morning
  • If you enroll someone on Saturday, the Day 1 email sends Monday
Subsequent emails:
  • Day numbers refer to business days, not calendar days
  • Day 3 means “on the third business day” — so Tuesday enrollment → Thursday delivery
  • Weekends and holidays are skipped automatically

Save and activate

1

Review your sequence

Check all email steps, timing, and content.
2

Save as draft

Click Save to save without activating. Drafts don’t send emails.
3

Activate

Click Activate when ready. Active sequences will send to any enrolled recipients.
Note: You can edit sequences at any time, but changes only affect new enrollees. People already enrolled continue receiving the original version.

Example: Prospect follow-up sequence

Here’s a sample four-email sequence for following up with new prospects:
StepDaySubject
1Day 1”Great connecting, [first name]“
2Day 3”Quick question about your goals”
3Day 6”Resource you might find helpful”
4Day 10”Checking in one more time”
Each email builds on the previous one, providing value while maintaining appropriate follow-up frequency.
