Slant has a dedicated import process for Redtail using a SQL database backup file.

What transfers from Redtail

Data typeDetails
HouseholdsHousehold records with relationships
PeopleIndividuals with roles, gender, marital status
Contact infoEmails, phone numbers, addresses (mapped by type)
NotesHistorical notes
TasksOpen and completed tasks
EventsMeetings and calendar events
BusinessesBusiness entity records
TrustsTrust records

What does not transfer

  • Email message history (syncs fresh from your email provider after connecting)
  • Redtail workflows (recreate these in Slant)
  • Redtail integrations (connect directly in Slant)
  • User accounts (created fresh in Slant)
  • Files (remain in Redtail; connect a storage integration for document management)

Export from Redtail

  • Log in to Redtail
  • Go to Admin > Database Backups (direct link: https://crm.redtailtechnology.com/admin/lists/backups)
  • Click Request Database Backup
  • Wait 1—2 minutes for the backup to generate (you may need to reload the page)
  • Click the file name to download the .sql or .zip file

Import into Slant

During onboarding

  • Select Redtail as your CRM
  • Upload the SQL or ZIP file you downloaded
  • Click Process my export
  • Continue with the onboarding flow

From settings

  • Navigate to Settings > Data import
  • Click New import and select Redtail
  • Upload your SQL or ZIP file

Choose who to import

After the file is processed, Slant shows the advisors, categories, keywords, and statuses found in your database:
  • Select advisors — Choose which Redtail advisors’ contacts to import
  • Select keywords or tag groups — Optionally filter by keyword or tag group

Decide who becomes a client

Specify how to classify imported contacts:
  • Keywords — Select which keywords designate a contact as a client
  • Tag groups — Select which tag groups designate a contact as a client
  • Categories — Select which categories designate a contact as a client
  • Statuses — Select which statuses designate a contact as a client
Contacts that match these criteria become clients. Everyone else becomes a prospect.

Accept the import

After the import completes, review the results and click Accept import to trigger data enrichment.

After import

  • Review imported data — Spot-check households, people, and relationships
  • Set service tiers — Assign A/B/C/D tiers to your clients
  • Connect integrations — Email, calendar, and custodian connections need to be set up separately
  • Keep Redtail accessible — Maintain read-only access during the transition for reference

Tips

  • Export everything at once. Going back for additional exports adds time.
  • Clean up before you migrate. Merged duplicates and updated records in Redtail mean cleaner data in Slant.
