Importing lets you bring data into Slant from spreadsheets, other CRMs, or any system that can export CSV files. Whether you’re migrating from another platform or uploading new records, importing streamlines data entry.

Every import follows these steps:

Export from your source system and clean the data.

Upload to Slant

Upload your CSV file through the import interface.

Map fields

Match your columns to Slant’s fields.

Preview and validate

Review how records will be created.

Execute the import and review results.

Before you import

Data preparation checklist

Before starting an import:
  • Export data from source system
  • Open in spreadsheet to review
  • Remove duplicate records
  • Standardize formatting (phones, addresses, dates)
  • Fill required fields
  • Save as CSV (UTF-8 encoding recommended)

Required fields

Different record types have different requirements:

Import workflow

Step 1: Prepare your file

Export from source

Export data from your current system.

Open in spreadsheet

Review in Excel, Google Sheets, or similar.

Clean the data

  • Remove extra columns
  • Fix formatting issues
  • Handle empty values

Save as CSV

File → Save As → CSV format.

Step 2: Start the import

Go to Import

Navigate to SettingsImport data.

Select record type

Choose what you’re importing (clients, contacts, etc.).

Upload file

Click Upload and select your CSV file.

Step 3: Map fields

Review columns

Slant shows each column from your file.

Match to Slant fields

For each column, select the matching Slant field.

Skip unneeded columns

Mark columns to ignore.

Step 4: Preview and import

Preview records

Review how records will be created.

Check for errors

Address any validation errors.

Import

Click Import to create records.

Review results

Check the import summary.

After importing

Verify your data

Check record counts

Confirm expected number of records created.

Spot check records

Open several imported records to verify data.

Test relationships

Verify people are in correct households.

Fix issues

If you find problems:
  1. Note what needs fixing
  2. Fix individual records manually, or
  3. Delete the import and re-import with corrections

View past imports:

Navigate to import settings.

See all past imports.

Review details

View records created and any errors.

Best practices

Start with a test

Before importing everything:
  1. Create a test file with 5-10 records
  2. Run the import
  3. Verify results
  4. Delete test records
  5. Import full dataset

Import in order

For related records, import in sequence:
  1. Households first — Clients and prospects
  2. People next — They link to households
  3. Tasks/Notes last — They link to households

Keep your source file

Save your original CSV file:
  • Reference for troubleshooting
  • Audit trail
  • Re-import if needed

Document your mapping

Record how you mapped fields:
  • Which columns went where
  • Any transformations made
  • Fields that were skipped

Troubleshooting

Common import errors

“File format not supported”
  • Ensure file is saved as CSV
  • Check file isn’t corrupted
  • Try re-exporting from source
“Required field missing”
  • Review required fields for record type
  • Ensure column is mapped correctly
  • Fill empty values in your file
“Invalid value”
  • Check data formatting (dates, numbers)
  • Remove special characters if needed
  • Verify values match expected format
